Eat So They Can Newsletter

Eat So They Can

Dear ,

First of all, thank you! Thank you for hosting an Eat So They Can Event (or committing to host one in the coming months) and for making this fundraiser a huge success! As the funds raised from events around the world come in we will keep you updated on the total amount raised. On behalf of those we serve in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, The Caribbean and South America thank you for your amazing generosity. Your donations will literally save lives.

I also wanted to thank the incredible Eat So They Can Staff. Eliza Raymond, and Caitie Goddard have been phenomenal host and ambassador mentors. Julie Metivier, and Jonathan Shutt have produced an awesome website. A huge thank you to Rachel Dickinson who put together our inspiring DVD as well as all our ESTC videos. And we couldn’t have done anything without the vision of Colin Salisbury and the wise wordsmith Lauren McMahon. All of you put in countless hours towards making this campaign a success and I want to acknowledge what a fantastic job you have all done. Thank you so much for all of your hard work.

As Thanksgiving approaches all of us here at Eat So They Can will be counting our blessings as we look towards distributing the funds you have all raised to our incredible partners on the ground around the world.

Thank you again.

Best,

Courtney ESTC Co-Founder and GVN Foundation Director

Continents

Eat So They Can on seven continents!

This year is the first year in ESTC history where we have events taking place on all seven continents! We'd like to celebrate by telling you about one event from each continent.

We have heard about so many incredible events and it was hard to select only seven to share with you so we highly recommend that you check out our story and photo gallery here. If you'd like your event to be featured in our gallery, just send us a couple of photos and a short description about what you did and we'd love to add your event!

Antarctica

Antarctica

Name: Nicholas Hoffman

Location: South Pole Station and McMurdo Base, Antarctica

Cause: Greatest Need

Events: Bloody Mary Brunch and Feast

Description: "This year I finally got Antarctica involved in this great cause with two events hosted on U.S. research stations. South Pole Station hosted a bloody mary brunch where the three cooks, Francis, Cody, and Raul cooked pizzas and a variety of other foods for the 49 winter station residents who’d been there since mid-February. The temperature was -65C outside with the sun just coming up after a long winter of darkness, but inside it was a festive event that raised $200.

At McMurdo Station, Head Baker, Nick, who coordinated the Antarctic involvement, cooked a feast for ~27 people of pizzas, cookies, and crème brulee. This event took place during 24 hours of light and -10C with a joyful air inside as people socialized, watched the DVD, and enjoyed eating ‘out’ (not in the dining hall feeding 947 other people at that time). This event raised over $600. People were moved by this cause and happy to be able to contribute to this event." - Nick Hoffman.

Daniela

South America

Name: Daniela Cabrerizo

Location: Lima, Peru

Cause: Peruvian Hearts

Event: Cocktail Party

Description: "The event went great!! We did a kind of a cocktail party instead of a dinner. We got a lot of support from two of my friends. One that does catering (Capuli Gourmet), so she provided the snacks and the other that has a new product that is a mix for pisco sours (Wasska), so he provided some of the drinks and I put in some wine.

We also got a good location (one of my friend's parents house) and everybody was excited about participating. I showed the introduction of the video, so that everybody would understand the reason for the event. I think everybody had a great time because the party lasted until 3am... it was fun. It has been great doing it and I am sure more people will jump into the challenge next year." - Daniela Cabrerizo.

Lauren

North America

Name: Lauren McMonagle

Location: Denver, Colorado, USA

Cause: Greatest Need

Event: Gourmet 5-course meal

Description: "We decided to do a nicer dinner this year. We invited 4 other couples over for a gourmet 5-course meal, prepared by no other than my fabulous husband chef :) He did a wonderful job and impressed everyone so much that they donated generously! And everyone was interested and excited to learn more about ESTC. It was a wonderful night and special to know that people all over the world were gathering at the same time for such a wonderful cause. We were excited to find out that we raised $600 through the dinner". - Lauren McMonagle.

VICDA

Africa

Name: Irene Wairimu and Tracy Pillay

Location: Nairobi, Kenya

Cause: VICDA, Kenya

Event: Cocktail Party

Description:

"Irene Warimu, the Kenya Program Director of VICDA and Tracy Pillay, from GVN/F hosted a Cocktail Party. The event kicked off with an introduction from VICDA and GVN, a DVD viewing of the distribution trip in April 2010 and a presentation of the second distribution in July 2010. Jewellery and bags from the Internally Displaced People (IDP) in Pipeline and Woman Against Stigma from Lenana were also displayed to raise support for these groups. There were project recipients from ESTC 2009 present and it was an opportunity for others to hear the impact from the ESTC funds.

We raised approximately U$250 with funds still coming in. We are hopeful that we can go into the draw to give a Kenyan an opportunity to go into the main draw for the grand prize. The funds raised from the ESTC events in the past have significantly impacted the communities we work with here in Kenya by providing milk to infants, goats as a sustainability project or providing school fees, to name a few. We are grateful to the GVN Foundation for their support and look forward to making a greater impact with next year's distributions." - Tracy Pillay.

Gumboot

Asia

Name: Shelley Bragg

Location: Shanghai, China

Cause: Kliptown Youth Program, South Africa

Event: Cocktails for a Cause

Description: Cocktails for a Cause was an incredible night of live music, live auctions, "dinner date" auctions, raffle draws, lucky draws, and guest speakers. The highlight of the night for everyone was the Gumboot dancing performance from the Kliptown Youth Program. The dancers had travelled all the way from South Africa to perform at the event.

Thulani, the Director of KYP, says "when we found out we were coming to Shanghai we were very excited. It is very rare to have the chance to share your culture and talents with other people halfway around the world." Their performance was a huge success and the event raised $9,000 for ESTC.

NAM

Oceania

Name: GVN Foundation

Location: Wellington, New Zealand

Cause: Greatest Need

Event: Vietnamese Lunch

Description: GVN and GVN Foundation put on a delicious lunch at NAM Simply Vietnamese in Wellington, New Zealand. With over 80 guests, the restaurant was buzzing but the event really took off when Congolese Sam Manzanza and his drumming team started playing.

Colin Salisbury, Caitie Goddard and Eliza Raymond all spoke at the event and we also showed part of the DVD. Our plan had been to only show the Greatest Need section but due to popular demand we were forced to also show the bloopers section! We are really grateful to everyone who supported our event, including the Intercontinental-Wellington and the James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor.

You can watch our event video here.

Rosemary Raymond

Europe

Name: Rosemary Raymond

Location: Charing, UK

Cause: Greatest Need

Event: Gourmet Lunch

Description: Rosemary Raymond is our oldest host at 87 years old. This is her second year hosting an Eat So They Can event together with her friend Jody. We are so grateful to Rosemary because she has shown the world how important it is to stand up and make a difference. If she can hold an event at 87 in her small village in Kent then this is trully a sign that it's possible for everyone to join the movement and make a difference! Thank you Rosemary for your incredible positive energy and dedication to the cause.
