Dear Friends, There have been rumours flying around that this year the Grand Prize winner will be able to choose between joining a distribution trip to Peru, Haiti, Vietnam or Kenya. Well, I have some good news - the rumours are true! As you know Eat So They Can is now a global fundraiser supporting projects around the world through our four causes. Therefore our Grand Prize winner will be able to pick their dream trip to one of our four locations. Our trip to Peru will be based out of Cusco and will involve distributing funds to a women's empowerment project as well as a number of childcare projects in small communities in the Andes. Our trip to Haiti will involve distributing funds to projects in Jacmel which are helping Haitians to gradually rebuild their lives after the January 12 earthquake. In Vietnam, we'll be visiting a number of orphanages and schools which desperately need our help to provide food, education and medical care to their children. And in Kenya, we'll be distributing supplies to schools, orphanages and IDP camps both in Nairobi and in surrounding communities. To be entered into the Grand Prize Draw you need to raise a minimum of US$500 or the equivalent in your currency (click here for more details). In addition, ALL hosts who raise over $20,000 will win a free trip. We really hope that as many of you as possible will be able to join us so please don't hesitate to send me an email if you'd like any advice or ideas. Thank you so much! Warm Regards, Courtney ESTC Co-Founder and GVN Foundation Director |

Art For Social Change by Kelsey MontagueI want to take this opportunity to tell you about an amazing lady called Kelsey Montague who has created a series of Haiti pen and ink drawings exclusively for GVN Foundation. Her unique work incorporates 'drawings within drawings', giving each print multiple meanings, emotions and perspectives. The drawings were inspired by both the plight of the Haitian people and by their indomitable spirit. "After the news broke about the earthquake, and the immense loss and suffering of the Haitian people, I felt a terrible sense of helplessness. I wanted to contribute in any way that I could, and the most natural way for me was through art," says Kelsey. "It's easy to feel overwhelmed by the situation in Haiti because the needs are so great, but this is exactly why we must get involved. When a nation of people has lost everything, even the smallest gesture is a great gift. Every effort, no matter how large or small, will have an impact, whether through donations, volunteering or spreading the word and encouraging friends and family to get involved," says Kelsey. Please show your support by sharing her artwork with your friends and family. You might also wish to purchase one of her drawings and have it as an auction item or raffle prize at your event. 50% of the sale price of each print will go directly to the Haiti Relief Fund. View and purchase Kelsey's work at Artists for Change at www.gvnfoundation.org/programs/art_for_change/. To support Haiti through Eat So They Can, sign-up as a host and select the Emergency Relief cause.

Feature Cause - Women's EmpowermentWe’ve just updated our causes page so that you can learn more about which of our partners will be supported through each cause. Check it out here. In the next few editions of our newsletter, we’d like to give you an idea about the difference that your funds will make. Each newsletter is therefore going to have a 'feature cause' and we're going to start this month by telling you a bit more about our Women's Empowerment cause. One of the projects that will be benefiting from this cause is called Kusi Qoyllor which means Happy Star in Quechua. Kusi Quoyllor is a community center located in the mountains near Cusco and runs capacity-building workshops for mothers. By training the mothers in areas such as textile production, Kusi Qoyllor is giving these women an opportunity to provide for their children and gain status in their families. They are also providing an alternative for women from this community who typically are forced to spend long days selling on the streets at the expense of spending time with their children. ESTC Host Mentor, Eliza Raymond, recently visited this project and was very inspired by the work they are doing. "The project is run by an incredible lady called Marlene and she has so many ideas and plans for the future but is very limited by resources. Supporting Kusi Quoyllor through Eat So They Can will make a huge difference to what they are able to achieve. I'm hoping that we'll be able to set up some new workshops and also extend the program to more mothers from the community." |
