Tanzania

tanzania Our partner in Tanzania is AfricAid, a nonprofit organization that supports girls' education in Africa. AfricAid's origins date back to 1996, when its founder, Ashley Shuyler, journeyed to Tanzania, and saw first-hand the devastating impact of overwhelming poverty on the lives of young Africans and the enormous educational needs that existed there. In a country like Tanzania, where a lack of education is so highly correlated with issues such as AIDS, obtaining an education can literally be a life and death matter for both individuals and for entire communities. And for many girls in Tanzania, going to school has never been an option.

The goal of AfricAid is to provide young women with the opportunity to transform their own lives and the futures of their communities. In support of its tanzania mission, AfricAid provides funding for scholarships, school supplies, school building projects, school lunch programs, vocational training and teacher training, and works in conjunction with the local initiatives of Tanzanians and other African leaders committed to education.

All of the money raised for Tanzania through Eat So They Can will be used to provide a school lunch at a rural Maasai school in northern Tanzania, Losinoni Primary School. The school has nearly 750 students, and most of them walk miles to and from school each day, with nothing more than an evening meal of "ugali" -- corn porridge. Amazingly enough $25 will feed the entire school for one day. Through the ESTC funds, we will be able to provide the students of Losinoni with nutritious lunches of "makande" -- corn and bean mash -- and porridge and ground nuts.

Since we started the school lunch program, attendance at the school has increased by 30%, and the teachers have reported that the students are now able to focus while in the classroom.
